“No one is above the law” must apply equally: Namal

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organizer and Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa said that if the President’s claim that “no one is above the law” is to be upheld, all individuals allegedly involved in wrongdoing must be investigated without exception.

Speaking at a public meeting in Kesbewa on 12 May 2026, Namal said that if the principle of equal justice is to be maintained, then those linked to alleged financial and administrative irregularities must also face legal scrutiny. He referred to a series of allegations, including issues related to coal imports, government financial transactions, and other reported irregularities, calling for proper investigations into each case. He also raised concerns over incidents in which suspects were allegedly pressured into giving statements, which he claimed had led to severe consequences.Namal further alleged that Sri Lanka had incurred unusually high costs in fuel procurement compared to international standards, while criticising rising electricity tariffs, taxation policies, and the broader economic burden on the public.

He said increasing utility costs and taxes were placing pressure on small and medium-scale businesses, as well as ordinary households. The MP also accused the government of failing to fulfil key election promises and raised concerns about governance and accountability within state institutions.Namal additionally warned against political intimidation, stressing that democratic freedoms must be safeguarded while ensuring fairness in law enforcement.
