Corruption: NFF calls for new commission
Charges that Govt. is enforcing the law selectively, claims that no action is being taken against Govt. Mins. The National Freedom Front (NFF) yesterday (24) proposed that the Government should set up a financial crimes commission with full authority, stressing that such would help combat acts of corruption that happened in the past and prevent the same from occurring in future.
NFF Leader Wimal Weerawansa made these remarks during a press briefing held yesterday where he criticized the Government’s approach of combating corruption. He added: “If the Government has a genuine intention (to combat corruption), only one thing needs to be done. Establish a financial crimes commission with full authority, and the public should be allowed to submit complaints irrespective of their party preferences.”With regard to the legal action taken against Wickremesinghe for an alleged misuse of State properties, Weerawansa claimed that certain acts by the present Government constituting a misuse of State properties have been ignored, and that the action taken against Wickremesinghe appears to be selective. He said that selective action would not stop corruption, although that is what the Government has employed.
