CSE tests 19,700 as ASPI reaches new YTD low

The Colombo Stock Exchange closed lower for a fourth consecutive session on 22 October 2026, with both benchmark indices weakening as selling pressure remained broad across the market.

The ASPI declined 209.38 points, or 1.05%, to close at a new YTD low of 19,717.92, while the S&P SL20 fell 38.44 points, or 0.68%, to 5,618.48. John Keells Holdings recorded the highest individual counter turnover at LKR 157.39 million.

SMB Finance provided the strongest positive contribution, followed by C T Holdings, Ceylon Tobacco, MAL.N and KHC.N.

The fourth consecutive decline, new YTD low and weak market breadth indicate that short-term momentum remains under pressure. However, the return of net foreign buying provides a modest positive signal, with the 19,700 region now becoming an important near-term level to watch for signs of market stabilization.
