Landslide threatens nine-arch railway bridge tourist zone
The Central Cultural Fund (CCF) has warned that the area around the nine-arch Railway Bridge in Modara, a popular spot for both local and foreign tourists, is under threat of landslide due to adverse weather caused by the cyclone “Ditwa”.
Several buildings in the area have been damaged, affecting the construction of a new tourist zone, the CCF said. The project, which includes electrification of the Arch 9 Railway Bridge and development of the tourist zone with an investment of around Rs. 300 million, was scheduled for completion this year.
Dr. Nilan Cooray, Director General of the Central Cultural Fund, stated that while the disaster has caused delays, the government has no intention of suspending the project. He added that efforts are underway to complete the development expeditiously, with plans to open the site to tourists next year.
