Opposition contemplating no-confidence motion against Speaker
– All Opposition parties representing Parliament are to initiate a dialogue to decide on bringing in a no-confidence motion against Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne whom they accuse of failing to come up with a proper ruling on the no faith motion against Deputy Defence Minister Aruna Jayasekera.
A group of Opposition MPs led by Chief Opposition Whip Gayantha Karunatilaka told Parliament journalists that all Opposition members will discuss and decide on a no-confidence motion against the Speaker.“The Speaker said he had studied the parliamentary practice of foreign legislatures such as the House of Commons in the UK and the Lok Sabaha in India. If so, he should have included his observations on these foreign Parliaments. He failed to undertake this exercise. Therefore, we cannot take his statement as a ruling,” MP Ajith P. Perera said.MP Nizam Kariyapper said the Speaker should have made a statement after announcement time if anyone is to consider it as a ruling.
