Ex-NOC President faces corruption allegations over gifts to OCA official
Former President of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL) – Suresh Subramaniam, is reportedly facing corruption allegations linked to the gifting of a gem-studded elephant figurine and purchasing an expensive dinnerware set for the Director General of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) – Capt. Husain Al Musallam, during an official visit to Sri Lanka.
It is alleged that the former Subramaniam had improperly utilized NOCSL funds and violated provisions of the NOC constitution in the preparation of payment vouchers and the signing of cheques relating to the purchases.According to reports, Rs. 116,375 had been spent on the gem-studded elephant figurine, while a further Rs. 445,413 had been spent on the dinnerware set.Although the former President had later reimbursed the money to the NOCSL’s account, reportedly 16 months after the allegations surfaced, audit officials have pointed out that the transaction amounted to a violation of the NOCSL constitution.
