Family politics is now over in Sri Lanka – President
– President Anura Kumara Dissanayake today said that the era of political dynasties is over, saying the practice of a President’s son succeeding him or a Prime Minister’s son inheriting the premiership belongs to Sri Lanka’s “old politics” and is not part of modern politics.Addressing a public gathering at the Sinharagama Grounds in Nochchiyagama today, the President said the people had made a clear decision to move away from the traditional political culture at the September 21, 2024 election.
“In our country, people generally used to think that if the father is the President, the son must also become the President. If the father is the Prime Minister, the son must also become the Prime Minister. That politics belongs to an old era—that is not modern politics,” he said.
President Dissanayake said the 2024 election represented a decision by the people to change that political culture.“And that has now been changed,” he said.He said the government was focused on creating a new political culture rather than continuing practices associated with the country’s previous political system.
The President also said there were no political threats facing his administration.
