A national-level program to control water pollution around Diyawanna Lake and the Parliament premises is to be implemented following Cabinet approval.

The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Infrastructure and Strategic Development directed officials to take steps to implement the program without delay.A task force identified domestic, commercial and industrial wastewater as the main sources of pollution and proposed short-, medium- and long-term measures.The program includes controlling direct waste discharge, preventing solid waste from entering waterways, installing wastewater treatment systems and continuously monitoring water quality.
