PUBLIC URGED BY ENVIRONMENTAL MINISTRY PERSONNEL TO GET RID OF SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BOTTLES

Environment Ministry urges public to ditch single-use plastic bottles

 – The Ministry of Environment has urged the public to reduce and eventually move away from single-use plastic water bottles, warning that plastic waste can remain in the environment for hundreds of years and cause long-term harm to ecosystems and human health. The Ministry called on citizens to adopt more environmentally friendly alternatives, including reusable glass and durable water bottles, stressing that protecting a clean, green and sustainable environment for future generations is a shared responsibility.

As part of efforts to reduce plastic consumption, the Ministry said a special circular introduced with its intervention came into effect on May 31, 2026, limiting the procurement and use of single-use plastic water bottles across government institutions. The measure is currently being implemented at state institutions across the country as part of the government’s broader efforts to promote environmentally responsible practices. The Ministry also said the government is continuing to implement commitments made on World Environment Day 2025, with a comprehensive action plan aimed at reducing the use of plastic and polythene being carried out with the participation of government institutions.

Meanwhile, preparations are underway to introduce nationwide initiatives to reduce plastic use under the amended National Environmental Act, in consultation and cooperation with relevant industries. The Ministry stressed that lasting environmental protection cannot be achieved through regulations alone and requires changes in people’s everyday habits. It urged the public to take simple steps, such as carrying a reusable water bottle when leaving home, saying collective action could significantly reduce plastic pollution and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable Sri Lanka.
