Trade unions warn railway service losing public trust
– The Railway Joint Trade Unions have warned that the continuing disruption of train services could undermine public confidence in Sri Lanka’s railway system. The unions said frequent cancellations, delays, technical failures and inadequate train services were creating serious difficulties for commuters who depend on trains for their daily transportation.
They said the cancellation of main office trains and the resulting overcrowding had made travelling particularly difficult during peak hours.
The unions claimed that some trains were experiencing technical problems before reaching their destinations, forcing authorities to delay, stop or cancel services. They said the resulting disruptions were affecting not only passengers but also workplaces, schools and other activities that depend on reliable public transportation. The unions called for immediate attention to the operational and technical shortcomings and said a comprehensive solution was necessary to restore the reliability of the railway service.
