Customs seize smuggled items worth over Rs. 250 mn.

Officials of Sri Lanka Customs carried out a special raid this morning (June 18), leading to the seizure of a large consignment of allegedly illegally imported goods.The forged documents related to the container had stated that it contained filter paper for tea.During the operation, a 40-foot container at the Grayline II yard in Colombo was inspected, where officials discovered cigarettes, turmeric, ginger, cashew nuts, and cosmetic products instead.Customs stated that the goods had allegedly been cleared fraudulently without the knowledge or authorization of the local importer.The seized consignments are estimated to be worth more than Rs. 250 million, according to Customs. Further investigations are underway.
