Former Sri Lanka fullback Lakala Perera has been appointed as the backs coach of the Sri Lanka national 15-a-side rugby team, bringing his valuable playing and coaching experience to the national setup.

Perera, a former St. Peter’s College star who also represented Havelocks Sports Club, CH and FC, and the Sri Lanka national team, earned a reputation as one of the country’s finest fullbacks during his playing career.The experienced rugby coach has been serving as a coach of St. Joseph’s College since 2024, working alongside former Sri Lanka player Dulanjana Wijesinghe. Under their guidance, the Josephian rugby team has shown steady progress over the last three seasons.

Perera enjoyed an outstanding playing career and was known for his safe handling, tactical kicking, attacking skills and leadership from the back. His performances for club and country made him one of the most respected players of his generation.

His appointment is expected to strengthen the Sri Lanka back division as the national team prepares for future international assignments. With his deep understanding of the game and experience at the highest level, Perera is expected to play a key role in developing the country’s attacking structure and backline skills.
