Pathirana in vain effort as Punjab snatch last-ball thriller
Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathirana bowled a splendid last over, before Sikandar Raza scampered for three singles in the final delivery to hand Punjab Kings (PBKS) a thrilling four-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 41st match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) played at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai on Sunday.
The 20-year-old promising fast bowler nearly defended nine runs for his team following a terrific performance as he conceded only five runs in the first five deliveries leaving Raza the task of scoring three runs for their fifth victory this season.
The former Zimbabwe all-rounder played an aggressive pull shot towards deep backward square leg against a slower delivery and then ran three singles before the throw came in from the fielder in the deep.
Earlier, Pathirana uprooted the stumps of the hard-hitting Sam Curran, with a good length ball, pitching on off stump as the England all-rounder missed the ball completely while looking to play the cover drive in the first ball of the 17th over.
Chasing 201 for victory, PBKS got off to a flyer with Prabhsimran Singh and Skipper Shikhar Dhawan adding 50 runs in just 4.2 overs before the latter got out.
From 81 for one in the ninth over, CSK pulled things back when Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets and PBKS were in a tricky situation at 129 for three after 15 overs, but the match changed when Liam Livingstone launched Tushar Deshpande for three huge sixes in the 16th over.
Deshpande conceded 24 runs in the 16th over and 13 more in the 19th over as PBKS scored a huge 72 off the last five overs to post a memorable win.
Earlier, Player of the Match Devon Conway continued his dream run as he slammed an unbeaten 92 from just 52 balls – his fifth half century this season – with the help of 16 boundaries and one six to help CSK post a formidable 200 for four after they had elected to bat first.
But in the last five overs, the PBKS bowling attack did well as Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja struggled to find the boundaries and CSK left runs on the table.
Much to the delight of the fans, Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni finished the innings in style when he hit Curran for two sixes over deep point and mid-wicket to get the home team to 200, but it was not enough on the day.
