Probe underway to identify organizers of Ranil protest: IGP
– The Inspector General of Police (IGP) said today that investigations are underway to identify individuals who organized the protest outside the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court when former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s case was taken up.The IGP said the protest, which took place while Wickremesinghe’s case was being heard, is being treated as a potential contempt of court incident. He said that they are currently analyzing photographic evidence to identify the organizers.
“We need a little time to identify those who organized the protest through available photographs,” the IGP said. “This incident has been noted as an attempt to pressure the court into granting bail. The Magistrate has also determined this as an act of contempt. Necessary legal action will be taken after investigations are completed,” he added.
The protest drew a large crowd of Wickremesinghe’s supporters, many dressed in black and waving black flags. Protesters chanted slogans denouncing his arrest and accused the government of launching a political witch-hunt.Police yesterday arrested a former Urban Councilor in connection with an attack on a police officer on duty near the Fort Magistrate’s Court during the protest. The incident occurred on Tuesday, when the officer sustained injuries after being struck by a bottle thrown by an agitated protester near the court premises.
