DMT to strictly enforce vehicle transfer rules from December 1
Under the existing rules, individuals selling vehicles registered in their names must submit copies of the completed MT6 form, the revenue license and the vehicle’s Certificate of Registration (CR) to the DMT within 14 days of the transfer. Fernando said the requirement was designed to protect vehicle sellers from potential legal complications arising from the subsequent use of vehicles that remain registered in their names. He urged sellers not to hand over vehicles with open papers and instead obtain the buyer’s signature on the relevant documents and ensure that the completed MT6 form was submitted to the department within the stipulated period.
He warned that sellers could face difficulties if vehicles sold under open papers were later used for illegal activities, as the vehicles would continue to be legally associated with their previous registered owners until the ownership transfer was properly completed. The Commissioner General said the department was raising awareness of the existing legal obligations to discourage the practice and ensure that vehicle ownership transfers were completed in accordance with the law.
