A warehouse in Peliyagoda belonging to a large-scale sugar importer, who was allegedly repacking expired sugar and releasing it to the market at lower prices, has been raided on July 06 in a joint special operation conducted by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) and the Walana Central Anti-Corruption Task Force.

The operation was launched following intelligence received from he Walana Central Anti-Corruption Task Force regarding a large warehouse complex owned by a leading sugar importer in Sri Lanka, located in Pethiyagoda, Kelaniya, in the Gampaha District.

During the raid, investigators discovered that sugar stocks imported as far back as five years ago, had already expired, but were being stored together with unexpired sugar and repacked before being released to the market at prices significantly below the prevailing market price. At the time of the raid, officers identified approximately 85,000 bags of sugar weighing 50 kg each (a stock exceeding 4.2 million kg) stored inside the warehouse. The suspects connected to the incident have currently been released on bail, while the entire warehouse complex has been officially sealed.

Further investigations are underway.
