Liquid milk supply drops
25 cattle, 9 buffaloes, 22 goats, 131 sheep perish, NLDB Chilaw farm the most affected
The National Livestock Development Board (NLDB) has recorded a downturn of 2,000 litres of milk per day following the adverse weather conditions, General Manager Dr. K.G.J.S. Disnaka said.Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (10), Dr. Disnaka said that the daily supply had fallen due to delivery routes being obstructed. The Board’s usual intake of 15,000 litres of liquid milk per day had been reduced to 13,000 litres. However, he noted that with roads now being restored, the NLDB expected to overcome this setback.
Commenting on the livestock, Dr. Disnaka said that one of their farms in the Chilaw area had been severely affected by the floods that followed the cyclone. Although there was not much damage to the livestock, the farm itself had sustained considerable impact.
He said the total loss of animals that had fallen victim to the rains and cold weather during the period amounted to 25 cattle, nine buffaloes, 22 goats, and 131 sheep. He added that 95 of the sheep that succumbed to the rain and cold weather were from the Chilaw farm.
