Red alert issued as heavy rain over 150mm expected

Colombo, May 14 (Daily Mirror) – The Meteorology Department has issued a red warning for very heavy rainfall affecting several parts of the country as the low-pressure area located northeast of Sri Lanka continues to persist.
According to the latest weather analysis conducted on the morning of May 14, the system is expected to gradually move away from the island within the next 48 hours.
The red warning has been issued for the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Very heavy rainfall exceeding 150 mm is likely in these areas, while heavy rainfall above 100 mm is expected at some places in the Northern Province.
Authorities have urged the public to take precautionary measures to minimize possible damage caused by heavy rain, strong winds, thunderstorms and lightning.
Meanwhile, rainfall recorded between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. today (14) showed significant precipitation in several areas. Kirindiwela in the Gampaha District recorded the highest rainfall at 142 mm, while Gampaha town received 108 mm.
Maliboda in the Kegalle District recorded 104 mm of rainfall, while Penrith Estate in Avissawella received 100.5 mm.
