Nearly 1,000 children diagnosed with cancer annually in Sri Lanka
Between 900 and 1,000 children and young people aged from birth to 19 years are diagnosed with cancer in Sri Lanka every year, Community Medicine Specialist Dr. Suraj Perera said.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Health Promotion Bureau yesterday, Dr. Perera said the number of cancer cases among children and adolescents remained a serious health concern. He said several types of cancer had been identified among young patients seeking treatment, with leukemia, prostate cancer, brain cancer, bone cancer and eye cancer among the cases reported.
The figures highlight the need for greater awareness of childhood cancer and early detection, as timely diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve outcomes, he said.
