23,000 teachers to be recruited by end of 2026, says PM

– Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Harini Amarasuriya said approval has been granted to recruit 23,000 teachers in line with a court ruling on teacher appointments, with the recruitment process expected to be completed by the end of this year.
She said the appointments would help significantly reduce teacher vacancies across the country by 2027.The Prime Minister made the announcement while addressing principals of national schools in the Western Province at an Awareness and Capacity Development Program held at the Ministry of Education’s Isurupaya premises on June 2.During the programme, principals were briefed on school administration, financial transparency in implementing development projects, and preparations for the country’s new education reforms. They were also given an opportunity to raise practical challenges encountered in managing schools.
Dr. Amarasuriya said the government recognizes the important role played by school principals and appreciates their efforts in maintaining educational activities despite resource constraints and other challenges.She further said that the government has developed a long-term strategy to address issues affecting the education sector and place Sri Lanka’s school system on a transformative path that benefits all students.
