Minister reviews expansion plans for BIA
Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Anura Karunathilaka has reviewed ongoing and proposed development projects at Bandaranaike International Airport(BIA) aimed at boosting capacity and improving passenger services.During a meeting with Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) management, discussions focused on infrastructure upgrades to accommodate rising passenger traffic, including expanded terminal facilities and enhanced service standards.A key component of the plan is the expansion of Terminal 1, which is expected to increase annual passenger handling capacity by around 500,000 passengers through improvements to arrival and departure areas, check-in and boarding systems, and immigration facilities.Authorities also highlighted plans for a new Terminal 2, with construction scheduled to begin in November 2026 and be completed within 30 months. The project is expected to strengthen the airport’s long-term capacity and support its development as a modern international aviation hub.
