Railway union accuses GM over engine failures

Sri Lanka Railways Station Masters’ Union (SLRSMU) has called for an urgent investigation into the recent breakdowns of locomotive engines, alleging that the current Railway General Manager (GM) should be among those scrutinized over the incidents.SLRSMU General Secretary Kasun Chamara, speaking to the media, claimed that a proper investigation would establish responsibility for the failures and alleged that the Railway GM was responsible for the current situation.
Chamara also showed journalists a letter sent by the Railway GM threatening legal action against him over statements he had made to the media. He alleged that the Railway GM lacked a proper understanding of the operational and technical issues affecting the Railways Department, including the technical faults reported in several locomotive engines.“The tender procedures conducted by the department were stopped due to the inability of the GM,” Chamara alleged. He said the union had therefore requested the Government to appoint a new Railway General Manager with adequate knowledge and experience in administering the department.
The SLRSMU also urged the Government to conduct a comprehensive and independent investigation into the recent locomotive breakdowns and take appropriate action based on its findings.
