JR’s grandson recalls grandfather’s stand on corruption
Pradeep Jayewardene, grandson of late President J.R. Jayewardene, recalled his grandfather’s stance on corruption, saying that people should not accuse others of corruption as there could be corrupt individuals within their own camp.
Jayewardene made these remarks at a ceremony held in Colombo today to mark his grandfather’s 120th birth anniversary.
“I used to accompany my grandfather to many functions during those days. I remember him meeting a group of businessmen in 1987. One businessman questioned him about corruption in the government.“My grandfather then asked whether there were any businessmen in the gathering who had either given or accepted a bribe. He asked anyone who had done so to raise his hand. No businessman in the gathering raised a hand.“My grandfather then said that one should not point a finger at another person because four fingers point back at you when you do so. What we see today is allegations of corruption being hurled at each other,” he said.
