Stable river levels, minor flood alerts in few areas: Irrigation Dept. reports

The Irrigation Department’s Hydrology and Disaster Management Division has released the latest Islandwide Water Level and Rainfall Situation Report for major river basins as of 3.30 p.m. on 23 May 2026, indicating generally stable conditions across most areas, with a few locations experiencing rising trends and minor flood alerts.
According to the report, the Kelani River Basin shows mixed behavior. At Nagalagam Street, water levels remain under alert conditions but are now falling, while upstream stations such as Hanwella, Glencourse, and Kitulgala remain within normal thresholds. In contrast, the Kalu River Basin is experiencing active fluctuations. Water levels at Putupula and Ellagawa are reported as rising and under alert conditions, while Ratnapura shows an alert-level reading but a falling trend, suggesting easing upstream conditions.
A minor flood situation has been reported at Kuda Ganga (Kalawellawa–Millakanda), where water levels continue to rise, though rainfall in the area remains minimal.
Meanwhile, the Attanagalu Oya at Dunamale is also under minor flood conditions, but water levels are falling, indicating gradual improvement.
Elsewhere, river basins including the Gin Ganga, Nilwala Ganga, Walawe Ganga, Mahaweli Ganga, Deduru Oya, and Malwathu Oya remain largely within normal levels, with no significant flood threats reported at most monitoring stations.
The department said that while the overall river situation across the island remains stable, continued monitoring is essential due to localized rainfall variations that may influence short-term water level changes, particularly in the Kelani and Kalu river basins.
