MP urges action over schoolchildren’s participation in LTTE cadre commemoration
– Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Chanaka Madugoda today urged the Government to take action against those responsible for involving schoolchildren in a commemoration event for former LTTE cadre Thileepan in the North.
Raising the matter in Parliament, Madugoda said schoolchildren had participated in the event while wearing their school uniforms and during school hours.“We would like to know from the Education Minister what action would be taken against the principal of the school concerned if an offence had been committed,” he said. The MP also questioned why statues commemorating LTTE cadres were being erected in the North.
He further questioned why a statement made by an MP describing former LTTE cadre Balaraj as a hero had not been expunged from the Hansard, stressing that racism should not be allowed.Meanwhile, Madugoda urged the Government and the Opposition to make every possible effort to secure a pardon for Sri Lankan national Sivarasa Anojan, who is facing the death penalty in Saudi Arabia.
“Both the ruling party and the Opposition should get together to save Anojan,” he said.
