At present, we see more than 6,000 cases being reported annually, while more than 1,000 patients die from the disease,” Dr. Thalagalla said.“Put simply, around 17 new patients are diagnosed every day, while three people die from the disease,” he said.Dr. Talagala stressed the importance of early detection, receiving appropriate treatment, regular follow-up and proper care of patients. However, he said many patients seek medical attention only after the disease has progressed and symptoms have become clearly visible.
“Unfortunately, we see many patients coming to hospitals very late, even after the symptoms have become clearly evident. At that stage, it becomes difficult to achieve good outcomes through treatment,” he added.
