Government lacks votes, not funds: Dayasiri slams election department

– Opposition MP Dayasiri Jayasekara strongly criticized the government over the continued delay in holding Provincial Council elections, claiming the administration is avoiding polls due to fear of political defeat rather than financial difficulties.Speaking to the media, Jayasekara said the government had initially promised to introduce a new system to replace the existing Provincial Council structure after coming to power. However, he pointed out that more than a year and a half has passed without any concrete mechanism being introduced.Responding to recent remarks made by Tilvin Silva, who reportedly stated that elections could not be held due to a lack of funds, Jayasekara questioned under what authority a political party secretary could make declarations regarding the postponement of elections.
He further said that political leaders are entrusted with protecting democracy and ensuring elections are held, not delaying them.Jayasekara challenged the government to test its public support if it genuinely believes it still has the confidence of the people.“It is not that the government has no money; the truth is that the government has no votes,” he said.He added that if the administration truly believes the country’s economy has stabilised and the public approves of its governance, it should proceed with the Provincial Council elections instead of using legal or structural amendments as reasons for postponement.
