72-hour detention order obtained to question Shiran Basik

The Central Crimes Investigation Bureau (CCIB) has obtained a 72-hour detention order to question alleged large-scale drug trafficker Shiran Basik following his deportation to Sri Lanka from Dubai.
Basik, who is alleged to be a major Sri Lankan drug kingpin, was arrested in Dubai earlier this year and deported to Sri Lanka on August 14. Upon his arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, he was taken into custody by officers attached to the Airport Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).During preliminary questioning, Basik reportedly told investigators that he was stopped and searched by Dubai Police while he was at a shopping mall. According to his statement, officers examined his mobile phone and subsequently arrested him after allegedly discovering footage of Iranian missile and drone attacks stored on the device.
Basik also reportedly told investigators that he was questioned by Dubai authorities over alleged links to Iran during his detention there. He further claimed that he was instructed to purchase his own air ticket to Sri Lanka before being deported.Investigators have also revealed that an Interpol Red Notice previously issued against Basik had been withdrawn following a court case relating to drug offences. According to the information available to investigators, he was arrested in Dubai while Sri Lankan authorities were preparing to seek the issuance of a new Red Notice.
The CCIB is now conducting further investigations during the 72-hour detention period. Authorities are expected to examine Basik’s alleged involvement in drug trafficking and other criminal activities, as well as the circumstances surrounding his arrest and deportation from Dubai.
