Subcommittee to probe Norochcholai Power Plant environmental impact

Colombo, May 21 (Daily Mirror) – A subcommittee has been appointed to carry out a detailed investigation into the environmental impact of the Norochcholai Lakvijaya Power Plant, following concerns raised during discussions at the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Environment, Agriculture and Resource Sustainability.
The new subcommittee will be chaired by Member of Parliament (Attorney-at-Law) Bhagya Sri Herath, according to the Department of Communications of Parliament. It was appointed during a recent meeting of the Oversight Committee held at the Parliament of Sri Lanka under the chairmanship of MP Hector Appuhamy.
The meeting brought together officials from the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Power and Energy, Ministry of Health and Mass Media, along with representatives from several other state institutions. Discussions focused on the environmental concerns linked to the operations of the Norochcholai power plant, identifying responsible parties, and reviewing possible institutional gaps.
Following extensive deliberations, the committee decided that a dedicated subcommittee was necessary to further examine the issue and formulate recommendations.
In a separate development, the Committee Chairman noted that discussions will be sought with the German, Japanese, and Chinese embassies in Sri Lanka, as well as the Indian High Commission. The aim is to explore training opportunities for Sri Lankan officials in advanced technologies used in modern power plants in those countries, strengthening technical capacity and environmental management standards.
