Export sector earns over US$ 7.3 Bn in five months of 2026
Sri Lanka’s export sector generated more than US$ 7.3 billion in revenue during the first five months of 2026, with the apparel, coconut-based products, and rubber industries making the largest contribution, according to Export Development Board (EDB) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mangala Wijesinghe.Speaking at a media briefing held at the Government Information Department yesterday (6), Wijesinghe said the apparel industry accounts for 30–32 percent of Sri Lanka’s total export earnings, generating US$ 2.063 billion during the first five months of 2026.
He noted that the sector remains one of the country’s largest employers, while exports continue to expand to key markets including the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and India.Wijesinghe also said the EDB has launched a new export development plan aimed at strengthening existing export industries while promoting new sectors. The strategy targets export earnings of more than US$ 8 billion over the next five years. He added that coconut-based value-added products such as coconut oil and coconut milk continue to see strong international demand.
