Police to take legal action against vehicles obstructing bus stops

The Sri Lanka Police has instructed all police stations to take legal action against drivers who park or leave vehicles in a manner that obstructs designated bus stops.Police said vehicles parked at bus stops frequently force public transport buses to stop on the roadway, contributing to traffic congestion and creating safety risks for passengers boarding and alighting from buses.
The issue has become particularly important with the introduction of wheelchair-accessible bus services for persons with disabilities. Authorities stressed that bus stops must remain clear to ensure that persons with disabilities and other passengers can board and alight safely.A special Government Gazette notification prohibits the parking of vehicles within 30 metres of a bus stop and within 15 metres of its exit.
At bus stops equipped with bus bays, parking is prohibited within 15 metres of the bus stop and within 10 metres of its exit. The Police said appropriate legal action would be taken against drivers who violate these restrictions and obstruct designated bus stops. The measures are aimed at ensuring that buses can safely stop at designated locations, improving passenger safety and reducing unnecessary traffic congestion.
