2 companies including SPAR supermarket fined for subpar salt sales

The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has imposed fines totaling Rs. 200,000 on SPAR Sri Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. and Raigama Wayamba Salterns PLC. for selling and distributing substandard salt.The Court imposed a fine of Rs. 100,000 each on both defendant companies.
The ruling was delivered on June 17 in a case filed by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) over the release of salt products that failed to comply with the SLSI 80:2019 standard specification, which was deemed as misleading consumers in violation of Sections 30 and 31 of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act.According to the CAA, samples obtained during a raid conducted at Union Place, Colombo 02, were forwarded to the Government Analyst’s Department for testing.
The laboratory report confirmed that the product marketed as “Welcome Pure Table Salt” did not meet the required standard specifications.Meanwhile, the CAA has urged consumers to report traders and manufacturers selling substandard products by contacting its 1977 hotline during office hours.
