Police in Nuwara Eliya have uncovered details of numerous large-scale financial frauds and other criminal activities allegedly carried out across various parts of Sri Lanka by the man identified as the principal suspect in the case involving the discovery of a woman’s body inside a parked motor car in the Teldeniya area.The suspect is reported to have been the deceased woman’s boyfriend. His legally married wife has also been implicated in the alleged offences.

These details were revealed in a special investigation report submitted by the Officer-in-Charge of the Nuwara Eliya Police Headquarters to the Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Nuwara Eliya Division, the Police Media Spokesperson, and the Assistant Superintendent of Police.The information emerged during extensive investigations conducted following the homicide, which was reported on 17 June.The principal suspect has been identified as Jayasundara Mudiyanselage Champika Sriyan Jayasundara, a resident of Kosgolla, Horombawa. Police state that his wife, Rathnayake Mudiyanselage Nethmi Amaya Rathnayake, was also directly involved in the alleged frauds.According to police records, the main suspect is facing cases before several courts across the island on allegations including deceiving women by promising marriage and fraudulently obtaining large sums of money, as well as cheating victims by claiming he could provide imported vehicles and overseas employment opportunities.

The cases include:

• Gampaha High Court (Case No. B 1893/19) – Allegedly defrauding a victim of Rs. 11,873,000 by promising marriage and unlawfully using motor vehicle registration number WP CBG 8532 in the commission of the fraud.
• Aluthkade Court No. 05 (Case No. B 98858/05/2018) – Allegedly defrauding a victim of Rs. 1,721,000 by promising marriage.
• Aluthkade Court No. 05 (Case No. B 15191/05/2019) – Allegedly defrauding a victim of Rs. 1,376,000 by promising marriage.
• Tissamaharama Magistrate’s Court (Case Nos. B 33176 and 33174) – Allegedly defrauding a victim of Rs. 2,200,000 by claiming he could import vehicles from overseas.
• Aluthkade Court (Case No. B 7002/23) – Allegedly defrauding a victim of Rs. 4,200,000 by promising overseas employment.

In addition, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is reportedly pursuing cases against him before the courts in Aluthkade (Case Nos. B 88175/18 and B2 1763), Horana (Case No. B 35175/18), and Kaduwela (Case No. B 12025/18).

Police further state that checks conducted through the AMIS database using the suspect’s National Identity Card number (198333704184), accessed via VPN, revealed that he had been arrested on suspicion by the Peliyagoda Police and the Fraud Investigation Division on 13 November 2023. The records also indicate that the CID had previously investigated him on several occasions in connection with frauds involving sums amounting to hundreds of thousands of rupees.

Investigations are also ongoing against the suspect’s wife, Nethmi Amaya Rathnayake, at a number of institutions and police stations.
