From today (June 19), the mandatory seat belt regulation has come into force for all drivers and passengers travelling on expressways.

The measure has been introduced under the National Road Safety Program implemented by the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development.An awareness program was held at the Kottawa Expressway Interchange to educate motorists on the new regulation. Leaflets under the theme “A Click for Your Loved Ones” were also distributed, highlighting the importance of seat belt use.The 03-month grace period previously granted for compliance ended today, and authorities have now begun enforcing fines against offenders.Accordingly, seat belts are compulsory for drivers and front-seat passengers on ordinary roads, while all occupants travelling on expressways must wear seat belts.

Offenders are liable to a fine of up to Rs. 1,000. Under legal provisions, drivers, passengers, and vehicle owners will all be held accountable for compliance.The awareness program was attended by Colombo District MP – Dewananda Suraweera, motor racing champion Dilantha Malagamuwa, and Deputy Director General (DDG) of Expressway Operations, Maintenance and Management – R.A.D. Kahatapitiya, among others.
