National waste management drive starts in Jaffna

– The ‘Clean Cities’ National Waste Management Program under the government’s “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative was launched in Jaffna yesterday (22), with authorities outlining plans for a nationwide waste management drive over the next three years.
The programme commenced at the Northern Provincial Chief Secretariat in Kaithadi, Jaffna, with a special workshop held to educate heads and officials of Northern local government institutions. The event was inaugurated by N.S. Kumanayake.Keynote addresses were delivered by Upali Samarasinghe and N. Vedhanayagam.
The programme, introduced in line with the government’s policy vision of “A Rich Country – A Beautiful Life”, is expected to be implemented islandwide with the active participation of local government institutions under the supervision of the Clean Sri Lanka programme.Officials said local government representatives were briefed on strategies, action plans and operational procedures to be adopted by Provincial Councils and local authorities for effective waste management.Among those attending the event were Karunanandan Ilankumaran, S.P.C. Sugishwara, government officials and representatives of local government institutions.
