LAUGFS power expands with new mini hydro project

– LAUGFS Power PLC has strengthened its renewable energy portfolio with the commissioning of the Kehelgamu Oya 2 MW Mini Hydro Power Project in Ginigathhena, further expanding its contribution to Sri Lanka’s clean energy sector.
The project, developed by PAMS Power (Pvt) Ltd, a subsidiary project company of LAUGFS Power PLC, has been designed as a run-of-the-river mini hydropower facility that generates electricity using the natural flow of the Kehelgamu Oya and supplies renewable energy to the national grid.According to the company, the plant is expected to generate approximately 7–8 GWh of electricity annually, contributing to Sri Lanka’s efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based power generation, strengthen energy security and promote environmentally sustainable development.
The mini hydro project has been equipped with hydro mechanical machinery supplied by VS Hydro, while generator systems and electrical panel boards were sourced from Germany. The company said the use of advanced technology and internationally sourced equipment is expected to ensure efficient, reliable and safe long-term operations.Commenting on the development, Russell De Zilva, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAUGFS Power PLC, said the commissioning of the project marked another milestone in the company’s renewable energy journey.He said the project reflected the company’s continued commitment to investing in sustainable infrastructure to support Sri Lanka’s growing energy requirements while contributing to a cleaner and more resilient energy future.
LAUGFS Power PLC said the successful completion of the project highlights its ongoing efforts to expand the country’s renewable energy capacity through sustainable investments, responsible project development and environmentally conscious practices.
