Police summon Dilum Amunugama over remarks linked to ongoing child abuse case

– Sarvajana Balaya National Organizer and Former Minister Dilum Amunugama has been summoned by Police to record a statement over controversial remarks made during a media briefing, following complaints that the comments may have prejudiced a minor linked to an ongoing child abuse case.
Police Spokesman F. U. Wootler said investigations are underway after concerns were raised that the remarks could have caused harm to the 15-year-old victim and witness involved in court proceedings.
The controversy erupted after Amunugama referred to information allegedly received by his party in connection with a separate case, including a statement that triggered strong backlash on social media over the language used.
Following criticism, Amunugama clarified that his comments were not directed at the child involved in the case and said they were linked to a different incident in the Nittambuwa area. He also expressed regret if the remarks had caused distress.
The Ministry of Women and Child Affairs has requested a Police investigation, warning the comments may fall under the Assistance to and Protection of Victims of Crime and Witnesses Act, while urging media and social media users to avoid further circulation of related content to protect the child from retraumatisation.
